September 20, 2017 -

President of BYU Hawaii - John Tanner and wife Susan spoke at the first Devotional which is
held every Tuesday at 11 am.  Their topic was entitled “Live Up to Our Privileges.”
Specifically, this is the privilege of getting an education in a Church sponsored University.

BYU Universities all share the same motto: Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.  This is a wonderful
reminder for all of us.  There are 68 different flags representing countries from which students originate. They briskly wave every day and are taken down every evening.

The lava-lava is an article of daily clothing traditionally worn by Polynesians.  They are common
in Samoa and Tonga.  Many of the young men wear these around campus with flip flops.  As you can imagine they are cooler than wearing pants.

The Valley of the Temples is a Buddhist cemetery.  Inside is a 9 foot tall Buddhist statue sitting on a gold lotus leaf.

Many students ride their long boards or bikes to school.  Students come from over 70 different countries to BYU Hawaii and only a few American students have cars.

Hawaii is full of all kinds of weird trees that make for fun pictures on a Saturday outing.

Look closely at the white blob in the middle for the baby seal.  His mother just weaned him and he is on his own.  He scooted down to the water to find dinner.  The area was roped off for his protection near Turtle Bay.

Hawaii is so full of exotic flowers.  This is the dragon cactus/flower we found on the way to work along the road.  It only blooms once and it occurs overnight.  It starts at dusk and is in full bloom around midnight.  It stays that way til the sun comes up and it closes again to become a fruit in 15 days.  You won't see it again until next year.

What would our morning be without one more glorious water color picture? This is first light even before the sunrise.
